Poison Oak Trail Project
Bunny Meadows Workday  May 31, 2008

Motorcycle Riders Association and BLM Crew Rehab steep 4x4  run
to reopen  the pre-existing "Poison Oak Trail".
Story by, Joe Stagg

First people to gather for the work day are from left to right Dennis Byrd of the BLM, and  Ron Maddox and Steve McIntyre.

Next, we all start working our way up to the top of the trail project. Steve Croucher, Jerry Stinson's daughter, Jerry Stinson, Dave Ware, Mike Caruso, Forest Bohall, Forest's son and Joe Fort.

Here we have Steve Croucher woking his way up past Dennis Byrd. In the picture, second from the left, Dennis is planting grass for cover. The root system will help prevent erosion in the future. He's planting the seed a little sparse. In doing this the grass will not over compete for water. Steve gets in on the planting in the right photo.

Jack Leroy also shows up and starts spreading straw. The rest of the group works their way down and continue spreading the straw. The straw will  prevent birds from eating all the grass seed and prevent initial erosion from occuring.

Here's a photo, on the left, of one of the water bars installed to run the water off to the side to cut down the total volume from continueing down the hill. On the right is a photo of some reworked hillside.

Some of the hill still needed straw bales delivered up the hill. Ron had designed and made a trailer for his motorcycle, to haul the bales. It was quick and quiet.
Click here to see a video of  Ron and his bike in action.

Nick from the BLM and a coworker showed up with some post, post hammer, and  a sign to install at the top of  the hill. Shelby came up the hill at the same time.

In the left two pictures below, Dave ware and I had taken over broadcasting the grass seed. The picture on the right  shows what  the waterbars look like
after seeding and being covered with straw.

In the pictures below, some of the guys are putting debris on the straw to anchor it. This is in the form of dead limbs and and small dead trees.

The closing of the 4x4 run project is looking pretty good.

Towards the bottom of the hill, Nick and his coworker are finishing off the fence that will direct the riders to the reopened "Poison Oak Trail". In the two photos on the right,
you can see where the county crew has a hole dug for a culvert. They will put a rock base in the hole and then place the culvert.
